In chapter 10,
Jesus sends the disciples out empty handed, but with full hearts. Jesus doesn’t give them the sermon to preach
or the words to say or the magic tricks to make people like them. Jesus, in fact says, “You are like sheep in
the midst of wolves.” Gulp. I want to raise my hand at this point and
say, “Um Jesus, that isn’t very reassuring!”
While I don’t know if this sending out really happened, I do know this
is true. God sends us out today. Not with life hacks and easy to follow steps,
but with a love to share. We are sent
out with God’s love that won’t always be accepted or understood. We are sent out with God’s love that might
have the door slammed in our face. We
are still sheep amid the wolves that lick their lips today. The Herods hungry for fame and fortune and
power, flexing their muscles getting a response out of us. Two thousand years, God’s prayerful plan for
the world is still to collaborate and conspire with humans ~ featherless
biped. Not sure this is God’s best
move.
As you keep
reading today, you will see that Jesus’ own life has twists and turns. It isn’t smooth sailing for the One who is
God’s love incarnate. Not everyone
follows Jesus. Not everyone thinks he is
God’s son. Today, I encourage you to
return to the pain/ache you named yesterday.
I am not sure if you felt strength yesterday or barely made it through,
but I do know you are still breathing today.
You are breathing and being and showing up. On this Saturday stay open to the One who is
there in the rough and rocky places of our story, not always smoothing the
path, but helping to guide us along the way as we put one foot in front of the
other. Amen.
